JE1 Task 5 – Interactive Story and Writing strategies
Cinematics
Cinematics help story telling through emotion and entertainment. They make the player feel like they can see beyond the camera and beyond the insight of the characters. It opens up the player to secretes that the characters in the game are not aware of, therefore helping the player understand the background of situations much better. This helps tell the story in two different ways, through the minds and lives of the characters and as a player outside the game, seeing through a camera.
Cut scene
Cut scenes are just another way of telling a story, but with less interaction from the player in hand. This makes it easy for the player to follow the story as all they have to do is sit back and enjoy the scene. Its also very easy for them to understand the scenario better as they get to see it from a different perspective, like a film. cut scenes also help link parts of stories together too, helping the player understand why certain things are happening and what has caused them to happen.
Triggered Event
A Triggered event is basically like a cut scene except, its caused by something happening within the game play. This can help the player understand the story line through their own choices within the game. This is especially effective as the scene was triggered by you, and so you understand how link of events that you have caused have led to this event. A triggered event is usually a secret boss battle or a secret mission that could be activated on certain conditions, in which case you have met those conditions and so triggered and event to happen.
Player Control
Player control is incredibly helpful in story telling, as it gives the player a feel of how some things might work if the game was in real life. For example, if its a fighting game, then the player fighting control would be very important as the player would take that control as the way it would feel to be fighting in the game.

JE1 Task 4 – Emotion.
Happiness

The Teensies in every Rayman have always been expressed as a very happy characters. Whenever he is shown in the game, they are dancing and cheering for the player to save them, no matter what the situation. Also blesses with magical powers, that they use to grant Rayman special powers, tools or pickups. These guys are so happy they have their own happy songs that play every time they are saved from their cages.
Vengeance

In Dragon Ball GT, Baby is the second biggest threat to the world and all sayings on the planet. His main objective was enslave all the humans, create a new earth then wipe out the Sayings. He has a personal hatred for the sayings as they destroyed his home planet, in doing so, killing and making the Tuffle race extinct. In any of the dragon ball games he is used to show the cruelty of the Sayians in their past, creating an injustice in his actions.
Anger

Kratos is a perfect example of anger, as all of his battles in the game God of war are fueled by anger and aggression. The way he fights and talks also symbolizes anger as hes always shouting or easy to irritate, since he has a very high temper. Not to mention, he is the God of war, which would explain why he loves to fight and express his anger through battle so much.
Perseverance

Bowser, or also known as King Koopa, is one of the most persistent villains in all gaming history. He is the main protagonist in the Mario world. Hes always been persistent as he never gives up on his chase to capture princess peach, despite loosing to Mario every single time. As such, he symbolizes perseverance.
Heroism

Racthet from Ratchet and Clank is the Galaxy's biggest Hero. As he has saved the galaxy more times than you could count. He is the perfect description of heroism as he always acts on what the right thing to do is, and rarely asks for anything in return. He and Clank save lives on the daily from all around the galaxy using his gadgets.
Valour

Dante is a very courageous yet arrogant games character from the Devil May Cry series. in the face of battle against any type of demon, whether big, small, or huge, facing any types of odds, he would always try to intimidate his opponent and make fun of them, as he takes nothing seriously. Despite his humerus side, he is indeed very brave and never backs down from a fight, even with all odds against him, he will do all he can with his unlimited demon power to win.
Hope

Lady Yuna from FFX is a great example of hope, as through out the entire game all her judgments and decisions were based off hope. In the story, Lady Yuna is a summoner, and such, she must fulfill her duty as one and defeat an almighty mosnter named Sin. She must defeat this monster using mystic creatures called Aeons that hold incredible power. But once sin is deafeated, the summoner that defeated him must take his place or their place as sin. Nut Yuna did not believe that that was the only way of beating sin, so she set out on finding a team to help her defeat him. This was only a theory tho, meaning she could've been very wrong and loose her life to sin, but she had hope that she was right.

JE1 Task 3 – Representation.
Stereotype: Italian-Americans - Mario(Mario Brothers)
Even tho Mario is a great character and is loved by many, he is indeed a very basic stereotype that is used quite often in video games, known as the Italian american stereo type. This stereo type can be recognized by the accent and tone of voice and is usually foreshadowed or shown to have a big family. For example, in Mario, he has his brother Luigi and his cousins, Wario and Waligi. While he is far better than any of the Italian-Americans in Mafia or Mafia 2, this plumber could make do with some polish and updating to his image. Italians have little to look forward to; their scale of representation is either a gangster or a pipe-jumping embarrassment chasing turtles and crabs.
Stereotype: Homosexuals - Gay Tony GTA 4
Grand Theft Auto has never been known for political correctness. While it blows past the ESRB, the adventures of criminals and the underground found new limits to crash through with the homosexual club owner and crime lord – Gay Tony. Tony Prince, the real name of the criminal, is a flamboyant, amoral, drug-addicted caricature of a homosexual character living in Liberty City. He is colorful, stereotypically fashionable and even runs Hercules, the gay club in town complete with shirtless goons. While Gay Tony is not as offensive as he could have been, having a high-profiled homosexual character in a game could have been a better choice than Mr. Prince.
Stereotypes: The Irish - Irish (Red Dead Redemption)
When grizzled cowboy John Marston meets Irish in Rockstar’s instant classic, the character might as well be wearing shamrocks and chasing a pot of gold. Irish’s accent is over-the-top, his antics revolve around drinking and alcohol nearly as much as they do sex (yes, he even propositions nuns.) Irish is an example that those of us with white skin can be the victims of stereotypes as well. Irish video game characters do not have a large amount of representation so when one of the Emerald Isle’s sons appear, there is a lot riding. Rockstar did catch heat for this character and his embarrassing ways.
Stereotype: Angry Black Man - Sgt. Avery Johnson
If you watch any cop movie from the 70s and 80s, they all had the loud angry black captain. That was the African-American pacifier – you’re in charge but your just one scream away from full hypertension. Well, unfortunately, Halo reached back to Starsky & Hutch in and brought out Sgt. Johnson. Cigar-chomping, swearing and grizzled-voiced, Johnson is the ultimate angry black man. While he is not terrible, Johnson could have been more multifaceted rather than one dimensional and predictable.

JE1 Task 2 – Storytelling within Genre’s
First Person Shooter(FPS): Borderlands

The triple A title Borderlands was one of the most popular and successful games at its time, some consider it still is. it tells its story of a man named handsome Jack, and mystical alien powers, through comedy and action. It uses 4 main characters, and one main protagonist, known as Handsome Jack. Their individual stories are told through voice logs that cant be found in any of its vast maps.

Third Person Shooter
(TPS)
GTA 5, also known as the greatest selling game of all time, is a perfect example of a third person shooter, with brilliant story telling. Told as if watching a film, the story of GTA is told through cut scenes, and real time in game scenes, controlled by the player himself, giving them the power of choice in some cases. The player plays as three characters, Trevor, Franklin and Michael. Trevor, being the psycho of the group, has a hard life living a lie, believing that his best friend is dead. Franklin, a young hood boy from the streets, gets himself involved with gangs, as his cousin, Lamar, drags him into it. Last but not least, Michael, a middle aged married man ,supposedly deceased , with 2 kids, and a mansion of a house to his name, recently retired from being a full time thief but now wants the adrenaline back. So ends up working with both Franklin and Trevor, to do jobs of thieving.
